Could have been a number of things, Leaking, new Insulation requirment, dangerous in classroom. Etc.

Eww, my school was gross back in the day.
Glad they got rid of the windows. They would be really distracting when I'm bored in Bopp's class.
Earthquake safety measures. The county had to get rid of glass in a lot of schools built in the 1950s-1960s because during severe earthquakes the un-tempered non-safety type glass creates shards of death. My old middle school got the treatment during the seismic refit and now looks like a minimum security prison. More honest architecturally but more depressing for the current inmates. Cheers, e.
